The Escape
A gap left by ongoing enclosure work, freshly renovated for her cubs, gives Irina a way out. Human error, not animal aggression.
Greenville Zoo evacuates staff and visitors from the grounds. Basha and both cubs stay secured inside the enclosure the entire time.
Greenville Police cordon off Cleveland Park. Officers respond with weapons ready as a precaution while the search is underway.
Irina is safely tranquilized with a dart and returned to her enclosure. No injuries to Irina, staff, or the public.

Not A Villain. A Mother.
Irina is a 4 year old Amur leopard, Panthera pardus orientalis, the rarest big cat subspecies on the planet. Fewer than 150 of them remain in the wild, all in a single protected forest corridor on the Russia-China border. She arrived at Greenville Zoo from the Saint Louis Zoo in October 2024, and on May 17, 2026, she gave birth to twin cubs, her first litter. Every one of those facts was true before she got loose for 38 minutes, and every one of them is still true now that she is back home with her mate Basha and her cubs.

Everybody Wanted To Meet Her
Greenville Zoo reopened the very next day. Instead of staying away, people showed up specifically to see Irina, some of them in leopard print. It is the third time an animal has gotten out of this zoo in nine years, and the only one anybody is still talking about.
